During the opening ceremony of the European Judo Championships Veterans 2025, Dr Ivan Bohaček was presented with a Plaque of Appreciation in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the European Judo Union Medical Commission throughout 2024.

This prestigious award was bestowed upon Dr Bohaček in honour of his outstanding professionalism, ongoing dedication to the health and well-being of judo athletes, and his exemplary service within the sport. His unmatched medical expertise and commitment have played a crucial role in ensuring that every competitor receives the highest standard of care, thereby upholding the integrity and safety of judo at the highest level. Following the ceremony, he shared his reflections:

“I am truly honoured. We have invested an enormous amount of time and energy, working late nights, early mornings, countless meetings and documents, to address medical matters in, for example, in adapted judo. From injury prevention to fair classification. At times, it just feels like your daily work but when someone recognises that effort, whether you are working alone or as a team, it means the world.

Personally, I am proud of our progress on inclusive policies, weight categories, and especially the framework for adapted judo classifications. As an orthopaedic and trauma surgeon, I bring insight into injury mechanisms, but this work is deeply interdisciplinary. We have built strong collaboration with referees, the executive board, and sports directors. Our platform now allows us to sit down, face challenges together, and find real solutions, like we did at the seminar in Budapest in January. That is the real reward.”
