The European Judo Championships Veterans Riga 2025 is officially declared open! The opening ceremony featured beautiful celebrations on the tatami, including traditional dancing. Beginning the speeches was Mr Vsevolods Zelonijs, President of the Latvian Judo Federation.

“Dear President of the European Judo Union, dear athletes, guests, and fellow veterans, it is a great honour to welcome you here as we celebrate the 2025 edition of the Veterans’ European Championships. I would like to express my sincere thanks to the organisers of this event. It is both a great honour and an immensely important occasion for us. My gratitude also goes to all those involved for their excellent organisation, professionalism, cooperation, and dedication to sport. I wish you strong fights, great spirit, and an enjoyable time in our beautiful city. Thank you all.”

After a round of applause from the crowd, Dr Toth Laszlo, President of the European Judo Union, addressed the arena.

“Mr Zelonijs, President of the Latvian Judo Federation, Olympic bronze medallist and esteemed veteran European and world champion. Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, Dear Executive Members of the European Judo Union, dear colleagues, dear Judo family,

“It is a great pleasure to welcome you to this beautiful city. Your presence here gives us the opportunity to grow our shared dream: that with each passing year, we come together for events of ever-improving quality, spirit, and competition. This dream lives within all of us, and it is together that we make it a reality. I am truly delighted to be here among you and I am overjoyed to see each and every one of you today.

“I feel the vibrant energy of our celebration of judo and I see it reflected in all of you. You are ambassadors of this spirit. Every athlete who participates in the Veteran European Championships contributes to its incredible development. Today marks a fantastic moment. A special thanks goes to the Latvian Judo Federation, to its President, to the entire Latvian team, and to everyone from the European Judo Union who has worked so hard behind the scenes. Your dedication is deeply appreciated. Step by step, we are building something truly high in quality, meaningful and lasting. I hope you enjoy this event as much as I do. I wish all of you great success in your competitions.”
